17 million people are now using the internet in Ghana.
The Ghana Internet Users Association (GIUA) has revealed that there are 17 million active internet users in Ghana as at the end of September 2022, up from 2.31 million in 2012 to 17 million in 2022 and 11 million at the end of last year.
The latest figure brings the total number of internet users in the country to 17 million in nine months, with the association pointing to data released by Google earlier this year, which estimated that more than 16 million people were already using the internet on mobile phones alone.
Why it is important
It is important to note that these figures show only those who have broadband access, not those with slow connections or who cannot afford it.
These figures also do not include mobile users, which would be significantly higher. There is no doubt that access to online resources has increased immensely, and as more and more people come online they will be able to reap the benefits of being connected.
Where its coming from
Ghana has an estimated 17 million internet users and is one of Africa’s most connected countries, according to Internet World Stats.
The technology sector is a major driver of economic growth in Ghana, employing about 20% of the workforce and accounting for about 15% of GDP.
As more people get connected to broadband, it will help fuel innovation in business and education.
How this will change things
In a country where only about two-thirds of the population has access to electricity, it is remarkable that so many people have access to the Internet.
The power of this level of connectivity cannot be overstated. Access to information, communication with family and friends, and economic opportunity will be possible for many more citizens.
It’s not just Ghana that is seeing this significant development; throughout sub-Saharan Africa, we see almost universal growth in internet usage.
Why there’s still some way to go
Despite this growth, 17 million is not a large number when you consider that there were about 27 million people living in Ghana.
That means only about 55% of the country’s population has access to the Internet. Plus, of course, not all of these users are online at any given time.
