2024 BECE Candidates to Sit for Only 5 Papers

The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is a crucial examination taken by final-year junior high school students in Ghana and Nigeria.

According to Mr. Duah, pupils will be assessed in five topics namely:

1. General knowledge

2. Mathematics

3. English language

4. Integrated science

5. Ghanaian language

In 2023, a total of 602,457 candidates sat for the BECE in Ghana, representing an increase from the previous year. The examination is divided into different subjects, and candidates are required to sit for multiple papers.

Number of Papers
BECE candidates typically sit for multiple papers covering various subjects. However, it is worth noting that candidates are not required to sit for all the papers. In the 2023 BECE, candidates were scheduled to sit for a total of 9 papers. The papers included:

1. Religious and Moral Education

2. English Language
3. Integrated Science

4. Ghanaian Language
5. Social Studies

6. Basic Design and Technology
7. Mathematics

8.Information and Communication Technology

9. French

Paper Format
The BECE papers consist of both objective and essay-type questions. The objective paper, also known as Paper 1, is a multiple-choice paper with 40 questions drawn from the entire syllabus. Candidates are required to answer all the questions within 45 minutes. The essay paper, or Paper 2, is divided into two parts, I and II, and candidates have 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete it.

Grading System
The BECE grading system varies between Ghana and Nigeria. In Ghana, candidates are graded on a nine-point scale, with Grade 1 being the highest performance and Grade 9 being the lowest. In Nigeria, the grading system changed in 2017 to a non-linear five-point scale, with A (Distinction) being the highest grade and F (Fail) being the lowest.

Conclusion
BECE candidates are required to sit for a total of 5 papers, covering subjects such as English Language, Mathematics, Science, Ghanaian Language, and General Knowledge. The examination consists of both objective and essay-type questions, and candidates are graded based on their performance. It is an important milestone in the educational journey of junior high school students in Ghana.
