$57.44m KIA expansion project suspended
The $57.44 million projected cost of the Kotoka International Airport expansion project in Ghana has been shelved. The project’s objective was to modernize the airport’s facilities and turn it into a center for West African regional aviation.
A new terminal, Terminal 3, was to be built as part of the expansion plans. Work on the project formally started in March 2016 and was finished in September 2018. The capacity of Terminal 3 was intended to accommodate 5 million travelers annually, with the possibility of accommodating up to 6.5 million people.
The Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) expanded Kotoka International Airport as part of its strategic plan to modernize and restructure the airport to accommodate emerging trends in aviation infrastructure and service provision.
The project was in line with Ghana’s goal of being the go-to aviation hub and leader in airport operations in West Africa.
The International Air Transport Association predicts that Africa will have the world’s fastest-growing aviation sector, which could lead to the creation of many more employment and regional investment.
Ghana is striving to become a premier regional aviation center for West Africa by pushing the limits of the continent’s airport infrastructure evolution with the construction of a state-of-the-art new terminal.
Nevertheless, the search results that are now available do not specifically address the reasons behind the expansion project’s postponement. It is crucial to remember that infrastructure projects may encounter a number of obstacles, including problems with finance, technical difficulties, or shifting priorities. These elements might have a role in the project’s suspension.
It is important to note that Ghana made great strides in supporting economic growth, facilitating market connectivity, and lowering business expenses by expanding Kotoka International Airport.
In order to handle the growing volume of passengers and cargo, the airport would have needed to be expanded. Ghana wants to establish itself as a major regional aviation center in West Africa.
