What does it mean to be enlisted in the Ghana armed forces?

In order to understand what it means to be enlisted in any armed force, you should first know why they exist. Armed forces exist for national security and protection.

National security is defined as a country’s defense against foreign attacks and threats, while protection refers to a country’s military preventing domestic violence, crime and destruction of property.

A soldier can serve in one of two branches: land or air. The three main roles within a military are infantry, artillery and support units.

Is it possible to serve as a volunteer?

When you join the military, you can serve as a volunteer. Volunteers make up an integral part of our team and are involved in various activities.

If volunteering is your goal, it’s important to understand that there is little room for error when serving in our ranks as a volunteer.

Our standards are high; therefore, we only accept volunteers who are genuinely interested in serving their country and making a difference.

As such, it takes a certain type of person to be accepted into our system as a volunteer.

What is required to qualify?

In order to qualify, you must be between 15-25 years old. They require certain grades and other criteria to ensure you are fit for military service.

Eligible applicants should:

  1. Be a Ghanaian citizen by birth.
  2. Be of good character.
  3. Not be bonded.
  4. Not be married.
  5. Not be less than 18 years and not more than 26 years by 06 Jan 2023.
  6. Be medically fit by Ghana Armed Forces standard.
  7. Must pass the Pre Joining Fitness Test.
  8. Be of minimum height of 1.68m (5’6”) for males and 1.60m (5’4”) for females. For Military Police only; the minimum height for male applicants should be 1.75m (5`9“) and 1.70m (5’ 7”) for females.
  9. Must have the following:
      1. BECE. Six (6) Passes at BECE including English and Mathematics.
      2. WASSCE. Six (6) Credits (not less than C6 ) including Core EnglishCore Mathematics. and Science.

    OR

      1. SSSCE. Six (6) Credits (not less than D ) including Core English and Core Mathematics.

    OR

    1. GCE ‘O’ & ‘A’ Levels. Five (5) Credits (not less than 6) including English and Mathematics at GCE ‘O’ Level and not less than D in three subjects and General Paper at GCE ‘A’ Level.

What happens if you do not qualify at first?

It is important to note that you may not qualify on your first attempt. There are a number of factors that may play into whether or not you will be eligible for an enlistment at any given time.

If you don’t meet standards, don’t lose hope! You can always try again in 6 months or a year if you continue to train and keep your grades up during classes.

How do you know if you passed or failed?

If you meet all of these requirements, then you passed! You now just need to send an email with your name and contact information to [email protected] If you fail to meet these requirements, try again next year and keep working hard.

This is a trial period for The Ghana Armed Forces, which means that they are only accepting candidates who meet ALL of these requirements.
