How to Learn Skateboarding Basics in No Time

Skateboarding is a very fun and exciting activity, but it can also be pretty scary if you’re not prepared. However, with the right attitude and approach, anyone can learn skateboarding basics in no time at all! If you want to get started with skateboarding, just follow these 5 simple steps and you’ll be shredding your local skate park in no time!

The first steps: stand on the board

You’ll feel like a little kid learning how to walk all over again, but it’s really just as simple. Place both feet on your skateboard and find your balance.

If you haven’t been skating for a while, take off any extra clothing (belts, watches, bracelets) because they could get caught on something and cause you to fall.

At first it might be hard to keep your balance and not fall off completely.

Push off with your back foot

When you’re ready to start pushing off with your back foot, gently push down on your tail with your front foot—not too hard or you might tip over.

Then push off from your back foot by rolling it forward. As soon as you feel comfortable rolling forwards and backwards, try picking up speed by pushing off with both feet.

If that goes well, move on and do a kick turn for added stability.

Slide your front foot down slightly

Moving your front foot as far forward as possible is a simple step you can take toward improving your skateboarding basics.

Starting with your front foot up on top of your board, simply slide it down so that it comes in line with the back of your board.

Then, shift all of your weight onto that front foot and bend that knee slightly, forcing you into a crouching position similar to what you would assume if you were doing a push-up.

Practice riding around obstacles

Any time you’re on a board, you can practice riding around obstacles. It doesn’t matter if you’re cruising down your neighborhood street or through downtown if there are any obstacles, you can use them to get used to controlling your board.

Riding up and down curbs is a great way to get comfortable with riding up and down or grinding around them.

Don’t forget about moving your feet

Balance is essential when you’re starting out. Practicing how to skateboard starts with a strong base of fundamental skills, so make sure you spend plenty of time learning how to balance on your board before jumping into any fancy tricks.

You will have an easier time if you begin with a quality skateboard that’s designed for beginners, and make sure that your first skateboard has smooth wheels, otherwise it will more than likely break at some point.

Work on balance as you improve your tricks

A lot of skateboarders struggle with their balance and lack a sense of control when they first start out. If you can’t stay upright, it’s difficult to practice new tricks and progress your skills as fast as you want.

Push yourself off from the wall

Push off from a wall and practice kicking your board with your heels, to learn how to balance on two wheels. After you’ve mastered balancing, try putting one foot down on your board and continue pushing forward.

Once you have a little speed going, put both feet down and ride! It helps if you carry some water with you so that when you wipe out, it won’t hurt as much.
