Military releases 150 Ashaiman residents.

Following the reported murder of a soldier, Sherif Imoro, last Saturday, several soldiers stormed the neighborhoods of Ashaiman Official Town, Tulaku, and Taifa early on the morning of last Tuesday, March 7, 2023.

The military detained 150 persons, largely young men, in certain Ashaiman suburbs; they have since been released.

They were released last Tuesday night, according to Ernest Norgbey, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashaiman.

A total of 184 local inhabitants were detained, and many of them endured brutal beatings at the hands of the soldiers.

The MP declared that community leaders would bring the issue up in Parliament as well as file a petition with the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

Some of the young people who were detained were transported by bus to Ashaiman last Tuesday night after spending the majority of the day in military detention, according to sources in the neighborhood who spoke to the Daily Graphic.

In a statement, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) defended the abuse, stating that the raid’s goal was to find those responsible for horrific acts rather than exact revenge for the soldier’s death.
The GAF declared that the swoop had been approved by its senior leadership.
