Sachet water to be sold at 0.50 Ghana pesewas from Monday: what this means for Ghanaians.

People in Ghana will now get sachet water at the rate of 0.50p Ghana pesewas per sachet, as the industry regulator – The National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP) has approved an increase in price of sachet water by 50% from September 19th, 2022.

What this means for Ghanaians?

Well, they will no longer have to spend double the amount they were spending previously on water. But what does this mean to you, if you’re planning to start a business in water retailing or distribution or as a consumer?

What will happen with prices?

The Association stated in a public statement that a bag of 500ml by 30pc sachet water will only be sold for a maximum of ¢7 from retail trucks. However, the commodity will only be sold at mini-stores for a maximum of ¢9 per bag.

Iced sachet water will be sold for 0.50Gp, while 500ml bottles of water would cost ¢2.00. A 750ml or medium-sized iced bottle of water will cost ¢3.00.

Over the course of the past few years, sachet or single-use bottled water has exploded in popularity.

Although sachet water is marketed as a hygienic and environmentally-friendly way to drink water without buying bottles, many people still find it too expensive.

How will this help our economy?

The new rate will increase the price of sachet water by half. This means that it is cheaper to produce, transport, and distribute the product, therefore encouraging more entrepreneurs and individuals to invest in bottled sachet water production.

Sachet water is a key component of our hydration efforts because of its low environmental footprint; it does not require a lot of time or effort for consumption and has a high shelf life.
