University of Education (UEW) Sets October 7 Deadline to Settle GPA Issues After Protests.
The University of Education (UEW) has set October 7 as the deadline to settle final year examination issues and other outstanding academic grades in the wake of recent protests by students at the Winneba campus.
This was revealed by UEW Vice-Chancellor, Prof Prof Mawutor Avoke After a meeting with protesting final-year students, the school also assured that there will be some updates to the GPAs starting from September 26.
A conversation with the Vice-Chancellor
To be honest, I was not expecting this, one Professor said. I’m really happy that the students have organized themselves and shown their dissatisfaction with the University’s administration.
This is a very good thing for UEW, another professor added. As a university, it’s our job to listen to student voices.
Students want their grades
The school has received complaints from students who feel their GPA records should have been updated.
Anxiety arose as a result of the students’ impending graduation in the following few weeks.
This is a very unfair situation, says one student. We have already been denied our right as students.
Academic registrar’s response
This decision was made after the protest against the university’s registrar, which resulted in violence and destruction. UEW has been facing a difficult situation since then with many students unable to get their grades for the upcoming semester.
The registrar has appealed for understanding from all parties and asked that all students register themselves as soon as possible so that they can access their grades and GPA’s before the deadline set by UEW.
The VC’s clarifications
In response to student protests, the University of Education has set a deadline for all issues with their academic grades.
According to a statement from the school, “Result-related issues that have been reported by various departments have been compiled and are being published for students to view online in the coming week.”
Response from students union
The UEPSU is alarmed by the University’s decision. We are disappointed by the way in which the University has handled this matter, said Mr. Donkor Felix popularly known as Abrantie, President UEPSU. We will not stop until we get justice for our students on their GPA.
What Next?
The university will be accepting their pending documents and grades from now until October 7 in order to settle their postgraduate certificate status.
Authorities met with the protesting final-year students earlier to discuss their concerns; nonetheless, the students were given the assurance that there will be some adjustments to the GPAs beginning on September 26, 2022.
