University of Ghana Launches 75th Anniversary: A Celebration of a Nation.
The University of Ghana, Accra (UG) Launches its 75th anniversary on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, with an investiture ceremony for the first generation of university graduates since 1948.
The event will be held at the Multipurpose Sports Hall at the University of Ghana Auditorium (UG), a development partner to UG since its inception in 1948.
The ceremony will also launch a year-long celebration of a century of nationhood through 75 years of Nurturing Resilience; Adopting Technology, Embracing Humanism.
The objective
This is one of the most important moments in the history of our nation. The University of Ghana’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, underlined in her speech how the university has changed since its origins on the Achimota Campus until 1961, when it became a full-fledged institution with the authority to confer its own degrees.
Not only will this be a commemoration to our past, but also a celebration for the future.
Why celebrate at the university level?
The University was founded in 1948 as the second university in Western Africa. It is ranked among the top 100 universities in the world by World University Rankings, and it is one of eight universities in Africa to have been given Five Stars Plus ranking.
This means that the university offers an excellent undergraduate education and higher level research while being considered low cost.
The celebratory activities
In her introductory remarks, the Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse, expressed her joy at the university’s continued growth since it was founded on August 11, 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast.
Over the course of the past 75 years, the university has emerged as one of Africa’s leading institutions.
Commemorating this milestone will be activities that include an open day with exhibits showcasing universities achievements in areas such as research, teaching and extension services; live performances by local and international artists; and theatrical productions that highlight both historic moments at the university of Ghana.
